Winter in the Fort Worth area this year has been a roller coaster. We have had to endure some extremely cold temperatures and have many of us looking forward to an early spring. Not that the days are that bad but many of us would rather not have to put on a winter coat to take the dog for a walk. Winter is generally miserable if you have to be outside and most of us tend to spend the cold winter nights indoors. It is a good reminder to keep your pets inside on those cold nights. Your pets are one thing what about your home’s infrastructure, like the septic tank? Regardless of where you are located, your septic system can freeze up, although unlikely in our climate, it can still happen. Look at the poor alligators down in Florida, sticking their noses out of the water so they can breathe when the water freezes over. The last thing that the Floridians expected this year was iced over alligator ponds, but that is what happens when you have a super bomb storm, the likes of which have never been seen in the last thousand years.
Hey… It Could Happen
Come to think of it, your septic system and those frozen alligators have quite a bit more in common than one would think. The gators need air to survive and your septic system needs to have a free flowing drain field. If the gators become trapped under the ice they will not have enough oxygen, if a drain field is plugged, the tank can back up and cause your yard to flood. Clogged drain fields can be caused by much more than a full septic tank but many times the problem is nothing more than lack of maintenance. If your drain field plugs up, saturates your yard and the temperature drops like it did around the first of the year, you could have a frozen system. Will this happen? In our neck of the woods, probably not; unless of course the perfect storm brought arctic temperatures and your drain field just so happened to be leaking for months. Hey you never know.
Avoiding a Freeze Up
Keeping your septic system maintained is the number one way to avoid any potential problems. Precautions like not driving on your drain field and keeping your system pumped on a regular basis will not only increase its effectiveness but allow you to sleep easier. So if it has been over a couple years and you can’t remember how long it has been since your septic system was pumped, give your local experts at B&B Pumping a call today.
